You can plant things in January? In Minnesota, people who start planting in early May are taking a risk.
Thanks Tim! Well, yes we can plant things in January. Just take a look at this http://www.weather.com/weather/today/San+Francisco+CA+94107

If the weather turns particularly cold again, say in Feb, I can tent the smaller greens with a piece of plastic over the whole planter. I'm taking a small risk and I think we'll be ok.

The bigger risk where I live in SF (SoMA's South Beach/Mission Creek area) is that the new high-rise buildings create a fantastic wind tunnel, so if the winds come up, everything small will be beaten badly and everything bigger will be wind-burned.

Hardier herbs like parsley and rosemary will sail through all this - soft little lettuces will be at risk in winds like those we sometimes get here. We'll see eh!
